NIE for British movers
How to get your Spanish foreigner ID number — the prerequisite for almost everything
What the NIE is
The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the Spanish foreigner identification number — required for almost any administrative, financial, or commercial transaction in Spain. It is free, issued by the Spanish authorities, and required before you can: open a bank account, sign a rental contract, sign a property purchase, open utility contracts, apply for residencia, file taxes, register a vehicle, register with the SSN healthcare. It is the single most important document to have before arriving in Spain.
Note: the NIE is administrative ID only — it does not by itself authorise residency. For long-term stay over 90 days, you also need a residency authorisation (residencia / TIE).
Apply before you fly out (strongly recommended)
The Spanish consular network in the UK issues NIEs free of charge to UK residents. Apply at the consulate covering your UK address: London (most of England), Edinburgh (Scotland), Manchester (north-west England), Birmingham (West Midlands).
The application is via the EX-15 form (or EX-18 if applying for residency at the same time) submitted in person or by post. Required documents: completed EX-15; passport (original + copy); proof of why you need an NIE (e.g. property purchase pre-contract, employment offer, a letter explaining the reason). Processing time is typically 4-8 weeks.
Applying from the UK has major advantages: (1) you arrive in Spain with the NIE in hand and can immediately progress utilities, rental contracts, etc.; (2) you avoid the post-arrival complication of having to attend an Oficina de Extranjería in person during the early-arrival paperwork rush; (3) some consulates are faster than the busiest Spanish offices (Málaga particularly).
Apply after arrival in Spain
If you arrive without one, apply at the Oficina de Extranjería or the Comisaría de Policía Nacional in your destination province. Process: complete the EX-15 form; pay the fee at a Spanish bank (around €10); take the form, fee receipt, passport, and supporting documentation to the appointment.
Appointment availability varies dramatically by province. Málaga (Costa del Sol expat volume) and Barcelona are typically slowest. Smaller provincial offices (Lugo, Cuenca, Soria) are faster.
Using the NIE
The NIE is used everywhere in Spain. Most Spanish forms have a dedicated NIE field; quote it whenever asked. The format is a letter (X, Y, or Z), seven digits, and a check letter — e.g. Y1234567A.
You receive a paper certificate (certificado de NIE). The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero — the physical card) is issued separately as part of the residencia process; until you have residencia/TIE, the paper NIE certificate is what you carry as proof.
