Bringing your car from UK to Spain
Vehicle import rules — registration, MOT, matriculación
Overview — what changes when you import
When you become resident in Spain, your UK-registered vehicle needs to be re-registered on Spanish plates within a defined window (commonly within 6 months of establishing residence). The car keeps its physical form but switches paperwork — UK V5 to Spanish permiso de circulación, UK plates to Spanish plates, UK MOT to ITV.
Documents needed for import
For matriculación española you need: UK V5/V5C; proof of ownership; proof of identity and Spanish residency (TIE, padrón certificate); evidence of vehicle arrival in Spain; aduanas import declaration (DUA — Documento Único Administrativo); recent ITV (Spanish MOT, less than 6 months old); certificado de conformidad europeo (European certificate of conformity, available from manufacturer).
The registration process
Registration is at the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico. The process: declare the vehicle import to the aduanas; take it for fresh ITV at a Spanish ITV centre; gather the documentation; submit the matriculación application to the Jefatura; receive the new permiso de circulación; have Spanish plates fitted.
Lead time: 4-8 weeks typically.
Specialist cases
Vehicles older than 30 years: vehículo histórico registration available with relaxed ITV (every 4 years instead of every 2).
High-emissions vehicles: may attract a one-time matriculación tax based on CO2 emissions.
EV vehicles: standard registration; charging infrastructure varies by region (well-developed in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia; thinner inland).
Right-hand-drive: UK RHD cars can be registered in Spain without conversion. Headlight beam adjustment required.
ZBE access in Spanish cities: most major Spanish cities (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao) restrict vehicle access by emissions. Older diesels may be excluded from city centres.
